(and this is kinda central to my criticism) I hoped that we would want more from art than just flattering depictions of our self-regard distributed via mass media so that we may point to them in the presence of others and say “See, you see, that is what I really am, that glittering beam of light up there – that is really me!” I guess I hoped we would want things like formal inventiveness, imagination, creativity, daring, brilliant failures, spectacles, grand displays, insight, care, empathy, joy, pleasure, fun; beauty more than base reality. I guess I hoped we would want more from art than just what we already are – or what we already think ourselves to be, anyway.”
