‘Life on Mars?’ was released 39 years ago today. This was the first Bowie song I ever heard after finding the 7” in a pile of my parents’ vinyl. It (and the b-side ‘The Man Who Sold The World’) was like nothing I’d heard before – beautiful, majestic, ethereal yet cheeky and infectious. Incidentally, the other vinyl I found and became obsessed with that day was Elton John’s ‘Captain Fantastic and the Brown Dirt Cowboy’.
Tonight is David Bowie night on BBC 4. If you’re not really familiar with him, watch it. It could change your life.
Eternal love to you, Mr Bowie.
